There will always be a wantan mee stall in any food court in Penang as this is a very common food.

However, there are not many places in Penang that serve good wantan mee. One of the good wantan mee I have spotted in Penang is located at Yi Garden Cafe.

It is not hard to locate Yi Garden Cafe. If you are driving via Perak Road towards Macalister Road, keep driving and you will pass by a traffic light junction of Anson Road. Keep driving for another 60 meters, you will soon see Red Rock Hotel on your left. Keep driving for another 30 meters, you will soon see Lorong Selamat on your left. Yi Garden is just at the corner of the junction.

Yi Garden is famous for many food. However, for lunch time the only food that is famous is wan tan mee at Hong Kei Wan Tan Mee, aka Koh Low ‘tall guy’ Wan Tan Mee. The reason for calling Koh Low Wan Tan Mee is because the owner of this stall is a very tall guy.

Wan Tan Mee – RM4.00, the wantan mee was cooked with slices of black mushrooms, veggie and also some barbecue pork slices. It was then topped with few pieces of wantan (pork dumpling).

The noodle was very springy. The barbecue pork slices were so nice in aroma. The dumpling was very tasty as you will taste the minced meat, spring onions and some chopped water chestnuts. It is the classical type of wantan mee.

Shui Gao – RM1.20 per piece, it is also known as shrimp dumpling. The main ingredient of this dumpling was shrimps, then filled with minced meat, water chestnut, mushrooms and carrots.

The shrimps were fresh and tasty. The bite of the shrimps, minced meat and water chestnut were incredible. It had the combination of hard and soft texture. The shrimp dumplings were also covered with a touch of Chinese fragrant wine.

Overall the taste of the wantan mee was nice. Both the dumplings (pork and shrimp) were delicious. There are plenty of public and private parking lots around. However, the drawback is the price of the wantan mee here is considered one of the most expensive ones in Penang.

I am not sure about others, but for me I am a durian fan. I would go for durian if I know there are good ones. Trying out fresh durian is very common. Have you ever tried out dessert which is made from fresh durian?

One of the special places for special dessert is no other than Lucky Dessert. It is not hard to locate Lucky Dessert at all. If you know how to go to Gurney Plaza, head to lower ground level and in front of the food court you will see this Lucky Dessert stall.

Durian Wrapz – RM5.00. The first that I am going to introduce in the list which is also one of my favorites, the durian wrap. The durian flesh was blended, topped with fresh cream and wrapped in a soft and smooth egg and flour coat. The durian was from grade D13 which contained the delightful localized taste.

Mango Wrapz – RM5.00, besides the durian wrap, the mango wrap was made in the same way as well. The difference was it was stuffed with mango instead of durian filling. For those that dislike durian taste, this is another option for with a refreshing taste.

Trinity Mango Delight – RM9.00, the the soup was made of coconut milk, full cream milk and whipped cream. The base for mango was a mixture of fresh mango cubes and the mango puree. The puree was self made rather than ready-made which was more fresh and tasty. It was then topped with sago balls and also pomelo fruit slices.

Trinity Durian Delight – RM10.00, most of the ingredients of this dish are the same as Trinity Mango Delight, except it used mango cubes and mango puree. I still prefer the durian flavor, maybe I am a real durian-lover.

Banana Krisp – RM12.00, this dessert was made of 1/2 slice of banana and thin layer of chocolate cake, then rolled together and topped with black sesame and icing sugar. The taste of the banana, crispy roll and chocolate cake blended in very well. It was a very spectacular dish.

Durian Krisp – RM14.00, again instead of banana, the inner was stuffed with mashed durian as well as butter cake as base. This is specially dedicated to durian lovers. The feeling of having durian krisp was like biting soft durian together with some crunchy cookie. The combination was phenomenal.

Mango Rolls – RM6.00, the inner filling was mango slices, it was covered with a layer of glutinous rice flour and topped with decimated coconut which the whole dessert was made like a swiss-roll. The mango itself was slightly sourish but overall, it was a very appetizing dish.

Durian Rolls – RM6.00, instead of inner mango it was replaced with mashed durian. This round, I prefer mango as the sweetness and the combination of decimated coconut tasted more appetizing than the durian filling.

Nutty Ginger Lucky Ball – RM7.00. Glutinous rice ball coated with brown sugar ginger gravy. Served with mashed peanut, coconut, sesame and sugar as seasoning. The taste was very unique, just like a dried-style glutinous rice ball.

Italian Mixed Herb Jell-O – RM12.00. The ingredients of this dessert were honeydew, mango, papaya, watermelon, glass jelly, strawberry and topped with basil seeds. A very refreshing dessert.

Lime Snow Ice – RM6.90. The lime juice was frozen in ice cubes. It was then ground until fine and topped with some canned pineapple and lychee. The taste was very sourish. If you don’t want to fall asleep, this will be the best dessert for you.

Black Sesame Snow Ice – RM6.90. The black sesame was grained, blended and made into ice cubes. It was then grained finely and topped with mashed peanut, coconut, sesame and sugar. Very delightful dessert.

Lucky Chestnut – RM5.50, one of the signature desserts here was the chestnut paste. The chestnut was cooked and ground finely and made into paste. It was topped with coconut milk. The taste of the chestnut paste was similar to mixture of lotus seed and peanut. It tasted good.

Set Lunch with Pancake – RM8.90, Set Lunch with Roll – RM9.90

Overall, I love most of the desserts here. Especially those that made of durian. However, one of the drawback here is there are no main courses here, just only desserts. If the desserts can be served together with a main course as a set meal, that will be perfect.

Some said at Bangkok Lane, while some even said at Esplanade. In fact, besides those places there is another place recommended by many Penangites.

The mentioned stall is located at Tanjung Bungah. This place is slightly hidden from the main road. If you are driving via Jalan Tanjung Bungah to Batu Ferringhi, you will sure bypass Jalan Lumbah Permai on your left and you will see Maybank situated in one of the shoplots. Keep driving straight along Jalan Tanjung Bungah until you reach Jalan Chan Siew Teong on your left. Turn into Jalan Chan Siew Teong and you should see a coffee shop called Kwong Ban Lee on the far end of the shop houses. Just next to the coffee shop is Pasar Mini Tedjen. The stall that sells Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus is just in front of the coffee shop.

Barkath is one of the few stalls in the coffee shop. Barkath has been operating the stall for 10 years.

Barkath Stall was initially located at Jalan Tanjong Bungah and has just moved to this coffee shop 6 months ago.

Barkath Stall is not only selling Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus, but also pasembur, roti canai, murtabak, tosai and capati.

Mee Goreng/ Mee Rebus, Regular – RM3.50

Mee Goreng/ Mee Rebus, Large – RM6.00

Mee Sotong, Regular – RM6.00

Mee Goreng, Regular – RM3.50. The mee goreng was stir-fried in semi-dried style, topped with fried onions, bean sprouts, chili slices, spring onions, squids, deep fried flour cakes and a slice of lime.

The texture of the noodle was very springy and the taste of the noodle was just as excellent. It was neither too sweet nor salty. The pan fried aroma was very tempting. The spiciness level was just nice and acceptable. This is in fact one of the best Mee Goreng in Penang.

Mee Rebus, Regular – RM3.50. As for mee rebus, it was cooked with 1 boiled egg, squids, deep fried flour cakes, bean sprouts, chili slices, spring onions and a slice of lime.

The mee rebus was not as tasty as the mee goreng. The gravy was thick and not too spicy. Overall, the mee rebus is considered acceptable. I still prefer the mee goreng.

Overall, the taste of mee goreng here was excellent whereas the mee rebus was acceptable. The price was inexpensive and the portion given was generous too. There are a lot of parking lots just around the shop houses. The only drawback is this place is very hot during noon and afternoon.

G Hotel emerges as an urban icon at the hustling and bustling of Gurney Drive. This hotel is specially dedicated to business class clients. One of the attractive and delicate dining spots in G Hotel is Soy and Sesame Kitchen.

Soy offers a scrumptious wide selection of tempting delicacies that are moderately priced. The menu offered here at Soy is a luscious fusion of Asian delights. From the exotic flavours of Vietnam, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan, Korean, Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Soy Kitchen is able to cater for about 64 pax.

The corridor from Soy to Sesame Kitchen.

While Soy is somewhat casual, Sesame is the more formal of the two. The decoration is done in rich shades of mahogany brown. This place can cater for 67 pax.

There are also private rooms for VIP.

Instead of Sesame, this round the focus will be on Soy Kitchen. The dishes of the month is TAIPEI SPECIALTY CUISINE. The offer for business set lunch is RM30.

The set consisted of the following dishes.

The offer of the selection will be on any 2 dishes selected, served with either steamed rice or fried riced and soup or dessert of the day.

Soup of the day - The soup that I had on that day was white radish and carrot soup. The soup was full of seafood flavor and the fragrance was so delicate.

Chilled Braised Bean Curd & Century Egg, The bean curd was braised in soy sauce and served together with black fungus, sprinkled with sesame and garnished with coriander. The century egg accompanied with the dish was topped with caviar.

Taiwanese Stewed Rice with Minced Meat and Mushroom, the minced meat and mushrooms were finely-chopped and cooked with bean paste. It was placed on top of the rice which made the rice more fragrant and delicious.

The option of steamed rice or fried rice. Personally I prefer the rice to be fried rather than steamed.

Snake Beans in Shrimp Paste & Beef Brisket Slices, the snake bean was cut into few inches long and stir-fried with beef brisket slices and some shrimp paste. This is one of the simplest yet delicious dish. The stir-fried was done on a moderate fire, yet it managed to create pan-fried flavour. The beef brisket slices was full of flavor and were very delicious.

Steamed Snapper Fillet, the snapper fillet was steamed with high-quality soy sauce and topped with soy bean curd crumbs, coriander and cushioned with angled luffa slices. The fish really tasted fresh and the best thing about this dish was it was poured with high-quality superior soy sauce. The texture of the meat was very smooth until it sometimes slipped through your throat before you managed to take a bite on it.

JIN DOU CHICKEN, the chicken was cut into pieces and cooked with black vinegar, plum sauce, tomato sauce, honeydew melon, capsicum slices, onion slices and garnished with lettuce. This dish was delicious and appetizing. It was not spicy at all and suited for non-spicy lovers.

Crispy Snapper Fillet, the snapper fillet was battered and fried in red curry sauce, then completed with cherry tomatoes, pineapple cubes and topped with coriander. This was a crispy and sourish type of dish. It was a very different style of presentation compared to the usual steamed snapper. This dish tasted nice and unique.

Hunan Style Beef Cubes, the beef cubes were pan fried with starch, dark soy sauce, sesame oil, pepper and Chinese rice wine. The was a very peppery and starchy dish. Usually, I’m not a pepper lover. Surprisingly it tasted nice and is one of my favorite dishes.

Stewed Bean curd, the bean curd was stewed and cooked with crab roe and crab meat. It was garnished with coriander. The stewed bean curd was thick yet slightly sweet. It was the usual stewed bean curd with the taste of seafood.

Braised Moi Choi Duck Breast, the duck breast meat was braised with moi choi, added with some chili slices and cushioned with crispy puff pastry. This dish is usual and very common type of moi choi and braised duck breast meat.

Braised Baby Chinese Cabbage, the baby chinese cabbage was cooked with dried scallops, wolf berry, enoki and shitake mushroom. This is not my cup of tea, the dish was just average and not up to my expectation.

Gula Melaka Creme Brulee with Coconut Ice Cream, the brulee was made of gula melaka and served together with coconut ice cream.

This is one of the great desserts I’ve ever tried. I love the brulee which was full of gula melaka flavor. When the brulee was taken together with the coconut ice cream, it was heavenly dessert.

Overall, the food here was great. The ambiance here was the selling point. Due to that, the price was slightly on the high side. For those looking for a good atmosphere to have business luncheon or dinner, this may be your answer.

This humble coffee shop is a true relic of days gone by. Established over 100 years ago and now passed on to current proprietor Gary Tan via his grandfather and father, it was, and still is to a certain extent, a centre of the community. Local residents, regardless of race or religion, pop in to escape the debilitating heat of the afternoon sun, relishing the casual, friendly atmosphere. There’s no need for expensive aircons; the shady interior is kept cool by ceiling fans and the thick tiled walls.

The local coffee they serve is strong, so sweet and thick it is almost treacly, and guaranteed to put a coating on your tongue. Prices have gone up from 10-20 sen to 90 sen – RM1.10 depending on whether you order a kopi (coffee with condensed milk) or kopi-o (black coffee), and their pnuar chneh sek nooi (soft boiled egg) is now served in trendy shot glasses, but apart from that, not much else has changed.

The deep-fried Spring Rolls (choon-pieh) is a must try for choon-pieh lovers. The skin of the roll is crispy and the filling is a mixture of crabmeat, prawns, chicken and mushroom. The accompanying dipping sauce made from HP, A1 and tomato sauce plus other seasonings and red chilies complements this dish.

Therefore, Pulau Tikus has become a “little Thailand” now.

No doubt, there are many Thai Restaurants which started their business in Pulau Tikus. Nevertheless, there is this restaurant that needs to be visited for almost every occasion. This restaurant is Aroy Chang Moo Kata.

The reason I’m saying that this place is catering for all occasion is because Penangites simply love steamboat, be it birthday parties, farewells or usual luncheon and dinners.

Although Aroy Chang Moo Kata is one of the many Steamboat Restaurants in Penang, the distinctive difference here is the steamboat is prepared in Thai style with charcoal.

Moo Kata Set 2 ~ 3 pax – RM30; 4 – 6 pax – RM60, this is main attraction and is also my favorite, Moo Kata Thai-style barbecue steamboat.

For the set of 2 ~ 3, you will get below items.

Vege basket

Mix Seafood Platter

Fishballs & meatballs platter

Assorted pork

Assortad chicken

Bacon

For the set of 4 ~ 6, you will get additional below items too.

Japanese Tofu

Egg

Emperor Meatball

To kick off the Thai BBQ Steamboat, the pork lards were placed on top of the BBQ Charcoal Grill so that it melted and flowed down to the edge of the bbq pan which contained soup.

All the items that can be barbecued will be placed on top of the dome-shaped grill whereas items such as vegetables can be dipped into the edge of the pan which contained tasty broth. Compared to other Thai Style Barbecue Steamboat, the broth did not contain MSG and was naturally sweet. This is due to the broth was cooked with veggie, chicken stock and some rock sugar.

If you look at the bottom of the pan, you will see charcoal burning.

Lemongrass Juice – RM1.50, the lemongrass juice was also very unique. It contained the strong and aromatic flavour of lemongrass, with a slight of sourness and sweetness. If you had tasted this drink elsewhere, it only contained bitterness and sourness.

Somtam, Young Papaya Salad – RM 8, the dish was made of slices of papaya, tomato slices, raw long bean, chilies and roasted peanuts and blended with lime juice and a touch of fish sauce. Usually a Thai appetizer comes in 3S, which is sweet, sour and spicy. Somtam is one of the appetizing yet exciting ways to start off your meal.

Pad Phet – RM35 ~ 45, the sea bass was firstly deep fried and covered with spicy gravy. It was garnished with Thai Basil leaves, chili and also spring onions. The level of spiciness was very high, hence it is advisable to be taken with rice.

Tom Yam Nam Sai - RM 15 ~ 25, Clear Seafood Tom Yam With Fresh Prawns, Squids and Fish. The soup was covered with slices of tomato, sping onions and coriander.

Again the spiciness and sourness of this clear soup was towards the extreme level. If you are a spicy lover, please don’t miss this.

Cha Om Omelette, the egg was beaten with cha om veggie and fried. It served well with Thai chili sauce. The taste of this cha om and fried egg was very nice while the texture was crispy.

Tamarind Prawns in Basil – RM 3.50/ pcs, minimum order of 6 pieces. The prawn were covered with a thin layer of batter and deep fried with Thai Basil leaves. They were then covered with tamarind sauce. The sauce was sourish and contained a slight of sweetness.

To me, this was an average dish and nothing much unique about it.

Larbmoo – RM12, fried minced pork with rice flakes. These 2 ingredients were fried together with chili oil, onions and bird eye chilis. The taste is again extremely spicy and hot as well.

Khoon Ob Woon Sen – RM15, the glass noodle was cooked in a pot and placed with prawns and coriander. The glass noodle had absorbed all the sauces and it was very delicious. This was one of the few dishes that was not spicy.

Thap Thim Krawp – RM2.50, slices of jack fruits mixed with water chestnut and added with red rose syrup and coconut milk. It was a delightful sweet ending.

Overall, the most attractive dish here is the Moo Kata Set. I will come back to this place for this. Most of the food here are reasonably priced and the service is very good. There are plentiful of parking spaces available by the road side provided that it is not the seasonal period of the temple celebration.
