Their motto is “pipes but no kilt” and that is exactly what they do- making wonderful music with bagpipes, windbags and whistles but minus the kilt which is normally associated to bagpipe performer.

The Griff Trio from Belgium uses the skills of three virtuoso bagpipe players arranged in a modern tune. Their repertoire is a balance between new composition and traditional music. They use different types of bagpipes including the army windbags, tubes, pipes and whistle. They also sing to their tunes.

The trio will be at the Penang World Music Festival this coming March and they will be all out to woo the festival audience with their contemporary music played in their particular style.

Tickets are priced at RM90 per day for adult and RM45 per day for a child age between five and 12 years old. Three-day ticket is priced at RM220 each for adult and RM120 each for a child.

Experience the exotic tunes of popular Russian band, Loyko as they entertain you with Gypsy, Celtic, Hungarian and Romanian music at the upcoming Plenitude Penang World Music Festival.

Originally formed by Sergey Erdenko in 1990, Loyko started its musical journey performing Russian Gypsy music. Fifteen years later and after an inclusion of another band member, Loyko’s music has expanded to include Celtic, traditional Romanian and Hungarian tunes, as a result of the band’s non-stop tour all around the world.

The members, Sergey Erdenko, Artur Gorbenko and Mikhail Savichev are virtuoso players, capable of taking music in unpredictable directions, an ongoing evolution the group joyfully embraces and audiences around the world have reveled in. Despite the evolution in Loyko’s music, its original musical influence based on the style of Russian Gypsy remains intact.

Organised by the Penang Culture and Tourism Development Office with UCSI Communications Sdn Bhd as the Event Management Consultant, the 3rd edition of the Penang World Music Festival 2012 promised to be an exciting event that would attract world music enthusiasts from all corners of the world.

Various interesting programs had already been lined up for the festival which will be held from March 30 to April 1, 2012 at the Quarry Park, Botanic Gardens in Penang.

Among them are the workshops which will be held in the afternoon, Kidz World workshop and the nightly concerts. The workshops will be held from 2pm to 5pm while the Kidz World workshop will be stage for an hour from 5pm.

The Kidz World workshop is meant for children and aim to be a fun-fill educational platform for them to learn about various musical instruments.

A total of 18 bands had been invited to perform at the nightly concert and they will present a unique blend of world beat. These bands are from Australia, Korea, Africa, India as well as local groups and together they are expected to rock the festival with their awesome beat and tempo.

Penang Philharmonic will be holding a chamber music concert featuring violin soloist Raymond Ng and conducted by Woon Wen Kin at Town Hall, Esplanade on Sept. 23 at 8.15 p.m. Some of the pieces that will be performed includes Mozart’s Magic Flute Overture, Messenet:’s Meditation from “Thats”, Monti’s Czadas, Brahm’s Hungarian No.5 and many more.

On top of that, as part of its Outreach Programme, The Penang Philharmonicis intends to revive the practice of a brass band concert on Sundays at the Botanical Gardens. Schools in Penang with brass bands were invited to participate in this revival, under the auspices of the Penang Philharmonic. On the 25th of September, the school band of Chung Ling High School, Penang will be performing. This program is being sponsored by Fumakilla Malaysia Berhad.

About Mr Raymond Ng:

Raymond Ng, a Penangite born to an illustrious musical family, from the age of 6 years showed exceptional musical talent in both the piano and violin.

He chose violin as his first love whilst completing accountancy in Melbourne, Australia and was tutored by Professor Nathan Gutman of Melbourne Conservatoire.

Later, he continued musical studies under Eric Gruenberg, former Concert Master of the London Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed over Radio Malaysia and in several public concerts. This evening’s performance features his favourite pieces from his 4CD’s of classical violin music.

Michael Learns to Rock (MLTR) fans are in for a treat – the Danish pop act is scheduled to visit Malaysia this April and the band will be in Penang on 22nd April 2011!

Presented by MBI International, the upcoming tour of this legendary soft rock band will take the stage of Penang Pisa Stadium on 22 April, featuring all of their popular songs as well as new ones from their recent album, Eternity, brought out under their own independent label, MLTR Music.

MLTR recorded a sell-out concert here in Malaysia back in 2009 and this popular Danish soft rock band does seem to have a strong fan base as all 6,000 seats at the hall were filled with groupies who seemed to know every word of the band’s songs.
