Copthorne Nyonya Buffet
Nyonya food came about as a result of Chinese immigrants who settled in Melaka, Penang and Singapore, adopting and adapting Malay and other local food to their own blander, less spicy dishes. As it was most often the womenfolk, called “nyonyas”, who spent hours labouring in the kitchen preparing and cooking it, the food is referred to as “nyonya food”.
Penang being so close to the northern border, the nyonya food eaten here has Thai influence: much use is made of strong flavours like chillies, coconut, tamarind, herbs and spices, and the “aromatic” belacan (pronounced belachan), a fermented prawn paste which adds a very distinct aroma to the ubiquitous rempah (chilli paste). Apart from noodle dishes, most are eaten with plain boiled rice to do justice to the delicious flavours.
If you would like to try some of this unique fare without the accompanying hassle of cooking it, then we have quite a few restaurants in town. However, most of them are a la carte, and unless you are brought up to eat this kind of food, it may be a bit confusing knowing what to order.
